Triathlon Training - Week 1

So I've made it through my first week of triathlon training, and I feel amazing!

Here's a breakdown of my first week:

Tuesday, January 31st - 5 mile run (speedwork)

I did this run at the gym on the treadmill.  I've been having some issues with my knees lately; it seemed like my Patella was starting to act up again, so I brought along my trusty Patella strap just in case.  The run went great with no pains whatsoever!

Thursday, February 2nd - 35 minute swim

This was only my fourth swim overall, and it was my first without having Jennifer there to help coach me.  Not to mention, I was kind of pressed for time.  But I went and I did what my lovely trainer had taught me to the best of my ability.  I did the SKIPS warm-up routine (swim, kick, drill, pull, swim), and that really helped get me back into the groove.  Then I worked on my form and my stamina.  Jennifer says I look halfway decent when I swim, but I just can't last.  I'm having trouble getting my breathing down, and I think that is really affecting my endurance.  So after my warm-up, I would swim 25 yards, catch my breath, and swim another 25.  Toward the end, I swam 50 yards before taking a break.  Right before I had to leave, I did a timed 100 yards (just to see how long it would take me, including breaks) in around 2:30.  Not sure what that really means yet, but it's currently my number to improve upon.

Friday, February 3rd - 40 minute bike

I did this ride around our neighborhood, and I think it was doomed from the start.  There are a lot of speedbumps around here, which makes for lots of starting and stopping.  I guess I was just too excited to get out and ride that I went flying over a speedbump and ended up riding over my water bottle that had bounced out of its holder.  I hit it so hard that the lid popped off and the bottle was crushed.  So after bringing it back to the house, I set out again, this time without water.  After about a mile I realized I hadn't started my GPS watch (even though I sat in the driveway for about 5 minutes waiting for it to link up with the satellite before I set out the first time).  The rest of the ride went pretty well, though.  According to the Garmin, I did 3.67 miles in 18:44.  Really, I probably did around 4.5 miles (or even closer to 5 if you include the water bottle incident), and I was out for around 30 minutes.

Saturday, February 4th - 6 mile run (long run)

This was another treadmill run at the gym since it was raining outside.  I started out with a 1/4 mile warm-up, then ran for 5 miles at a 10 minute mile (6 mph).  Since I'm trying to get myself into the habit of starting slow and going faster at the end, I ran the last mile at 7 mph (roughly 8.5 minutes per mile), then finished with a cool-down.  I don't mind running on the treadmill, but I absolutely hate how they automatically go into a cool-down after an hour.  I was at 5.88 miles total (so 5.63 miles running) when it shut off on me.  So annoying!  But it was pretty cool that I did a 10K (6.2 miles) in right around an hour!  My PR (personal record) for a 10K is 57:47, so I think I'll be able to beat that this year.

Which brings me to a little goal of mine.  Jennifer gave me the idea, so I definitely can't take credit for it, but I think it would be cool if I PR'd all four races this year (5K, 10K, 10 miler, half-marathon).  My times to beat are:

5K: 25:45
10K: 57:47
10 mi: 1:43:22
13.1 mi: 2:20:18

Also, I want to do the half in under 2 hours.  There, it's out there.  Now I have to hold myself to it!

  1. Nice week there broski. Those running times would be pretty sexified if you can meet them.
