Triathlon Training - Week 2

Sunday, February 5th - 30 minute bike

For this bike, I did roughly the same course around our neighborhood as I did the other day.  I only had about 30 minutes since Jennifer had to get to a spin class, so I was hoping everything would go better this time around.  The weather was decent; the roads were a little wet, the sky was overcast, and the air was quite chilly (especially for forgetting gloves!), but it made for a pretty good ride.  I ended up getting in 5.37 miles in 24 minutes and 13 seconds (which was an average speed of 13.3 mph).  I feel like I paced myself better, too -- my legs felt much better after the ride than they did on Friday.

Monday, February 6th - 20 minute swim & 2 mile easy run

I guess I'm just not in the habit of working out after work yet, because I always seem to forget something.  This time, it was a towel.  I had already changed at work, so I figured I'd just run home and grab a towel and head to the pool for my workout.  It didn't quite turn out that way, but I still made it to the pool.  Instead of swimming then running, I had to run first since it was getting dark out -- a quick 2 miles in 18:20, and check out that sunset!

And my amazing wife put together a nice little workout for me for my swim.  The training program had me down for a 20 minute swim, but I agree with her in that it's better to train by distance instead of by time.  The workout was challenging, but not too difficult.  After the warm-up, I alternated between drills and "the crawl" for a total of 750 yards, and it took me somewhere around 30 or 35 minutes to do it all (including breaks).  I really need to get a swim watch so I can track my time better; I'm horrible about remembering to look at the clock when I start.

Thursday, February 9th - 5 mile tempo run

Ran at the gym on the treadmill again for this one.  I was supposed to do a 4 mile run at a 9:14/mile pace (6.5 mph), with a half-mile warm-up and cool-down, but it didn't quite go that way.  I ended up doing a full mile warm-up while chatting with Jennifer (trying to get her to go to the pool for a workout, no less!), and ended up pausing the treadmill after running for a bit so I could text her.  I forgot that the treadmills shut off automatically after a minute or so, so I lost what progress I had.  It was around .4 miles from what I could remember, so I started it back up and ran for another 3.7 miles just to be on the safe side.  I only cooled down for a few minutes since it was getting late and we had to get home so B could get to bed on time.  The run went great with no pains, and I even upped the pace a little to 7.0 mph (8:34/mile) for a mile in the middle.

Friday, February 10th - 40 30 minute bike

Since it was so cold out again, I went to the gym and did this ride in the Spinning room (on my own -- no class).  It seems to be a fairly common occurrence, but I was running a little late again.  This time, something came up with work; but the important thing is that I got some time on the bike!  I tried to push myself since I didn't have much time, and I tried to alternate between the various positions and types of roads (adding tension to simulate hills, etc).

Saturday, February 11th - 25 minute 1050 yard swim

This swim was a treat!  It seems that lately, Jennifer and I have been so busy with our own schedules that we haven't had much time together, including time to train together -- something we both really enjoy and something that really seems to bring us closer.  I was really excited (and a little nervous) to have her see the progress I've made, and get some pointers on things I need to work on now (because, let's face it, for the first few swims, I was just trying to do it without drinking lots of water or drowning).

She was really impressed!  Obviously there were plenty of things I still needed to work on, but for this workout she gave me some new drills that really helped me understand some of the techniques.  I feel like I've improved so much!  I even did two extra 100's (100 yards) without stopping after I finished my workout!

  1. I really enjoy reading your training recaps! :) looks like you got a good week of training in! I am really proud of your commitment and how much you've improved already.
