Baby G's 5 Month Update

Right before I turned 30, our little boy turned 5 months.

We haven't been to the doctor since his four-month checkup, so we don't know!

But he's been growing like crazy and seems to surprise us with some new trick nearly every day.

Here's a little bit of what's new.

He LOVES looking at himself in the mirror or on our phones, which has led to some really cute candid pictures of him.

The only problem is he's in the stage where everything goes into his mouth...

Eating solids

I briefly touched on this one last month but now it's official -- our boy has started solids. The doctor told us to try to hold out until we got as close to 6 months as possible, but that we could start him whenever he seemed ready. When he started waking up in the middle of the night, or waking up earlier in the morning acting like he was starving, we decided that it couldn't hurt to try.

We started with avocado, and the kid was a natural (he would open wide at the sight of the
spoon, like he'd been doing it for months).

So far he's had avocado, sweet potatoes, bananas, applesauce, pears, green beans, and carrots. The only thing he didn't like was the green beans, and I think his favorites are applesauce, pears, and carrots (he always goes "MMMM" after every bite).

For the last few weeks we've been trying a new napping routine and it seems to be working really well.

He's still sleeping from around 9pm at night until 8 or 8:30am the next morning, then he takes his morning nap (which is usually anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour or so) around 11am, and his longer afternoon nap (2 or 2 1/2 hours) between 2:30pm and 5:30pm. Sometimes if we're out running errands in the morning he'll only sleep for 20 or 30 minutes in the car seat, which throws off his afternoon nap (but even though he goes down earlier he usually ends up sleeping longer and everything balances back out).

It's not perfect, but it's a nice change from him taking a half-hour nap every 2 hours.

He's usually a very sleepy boy in the afternoon right before nap time...

And we're LOVING having a solid 2 hours in the afternoon to get stuff done. I'm telling ya, it's life-changing.

First trip to the gym

Last month we switched over the the Y since they have better child care, a pool, and an indoor track.

Grayson was quite impressed.

Since joining, he's gone to the gym a few times a week and he always does really well. Of course, we time our visits around his napping and feeding schedule.

Other Fun Things

He's still my little helper, and we still go check on the garden every day after I get home from work.

He LOVES being outside!

It seems that over the last month or so our boy has transitioned away from laying on the floor (on his play mat) and prefers to be in more of an upright position, so the exersaucer has been a lifesaver.

Sitting Up

Yep, this is happening now, too:

He's not completely stable yet, but he loves to sit up and play with his toys now.

Helping me work

And he's on the verge of crawling now, too!

He'll push himself up on his hands and knees and start rocking, but he hasn't quite figured out how to go forward yet (he just ends up scooting sideways and backwards and gets really mad about it... haha!).

Baby plank!

I have a feeling it won't be long before we're chasing him all around the house!
